- Bioshock is an awesome looking game.
- The sound effects are amazing.
- The story is really interesting.
- The game play is engaging and very natural.
These are all really great reasons to want to play Bioshock however there is one reason to avoid it, at least in my case:
- It scares the ever-lovin bejeebus out of me.
Over at my personal blog I’ve written about my tendencies to get too caught up in a game. So why on earth am I playing Bioshock of all things!?
Because of those first points about how good the game is, I really want to play the game and I want to finish it but the thing is so bloody good that it does terrify me beyond belief.
I should probably mention for those yet to play Bioshock that there will be spoilers from here on in, in fact you can probably assume there will be spoilers in any posts here under the “Game Progress” category.
Straight away when you are stuck in that bathysphere and one of the Splicers attacks the thing and is trying to get in at you it’s like my worst nightmare and it sets the tone for the whole game.
I’m not very far into the game as it is always slow going as I creep around the hallways and spend time hiding behind the couch with the dog. I do like the environment that the game creates, I especially enjoyed the sequence at the start where you encounter the female Splicer talking to a pram in silhouette because of the lighting. I mean you know it’s not going to be good but you can’t go in swinging immediately and of course she turns on you. In that sequence I actually fumbled the controls and shot her at point blank by mistake which shows how clever the game play is.
I’ll update you all when I get out of the Medical Pavilion.
I conquered a giant baby… no game scares me these days!

I only have a very vague recollection of the baby in Zombies – did it shoot you with it's bottle or is this a whole different nightmare I'm thinking of?

I used to get jumpy as hell after playing Half-Life or Quake for a few hours… especially HL. All those guys with the crabs from another dimension on their heads sucking their brains out…

Then again, I have something like this in my background too, so I may be approaching things from a different angle than you are:

Speaking of Bioshock, I wonder if you have seen this:

I know what to wear to scare the bejeezus out of you when I sneak up on you in a dark alley…

You have no idea how much I wanted to play Shadow of the Colossus but could never find a copy to buy and eBay prices reflected the scarcity of the title.
Beautiful looking game!!
May I also mention that I love how disqus embeds those links so I don't have to go off to youtube.

I spent half an hour or so in the Half-Life universe. I enjoyed the monorail trip and getting dressed for work but then things went a little pear shaped

I tell you, you show up at my door like that and… and… ummmm You'll get such a frowning at from behind the couch!!

It is like an art film… beautiful, but ultimately, a little dull. Is it worth 89 Australian dollars… I don't think it is.
I think it all depends on what kind of games you like. If you like slow, conceptual games, then it is for you. If you are like me and you were killing custom-made ED-209 bots in Unreal Tournament before breakfast, then it is probably not for you.
If you were region-free over there, I'd totally set you up with a copy (because it is more widely available).
