Mashing Buttons

a couple of gamers blogging about games

First of all what a ridiculous title for a game, it should be called Hockey A Go Go or something similar.  It should at least have hockey in the name because whenever I’m telling Greg I’m going to go play NHL2K10 I always say I’m off to play hockey (he assumes I’m not playing real hockey out in the street, I guess).

There is a second reason why the name should be different.

It’s an awful lot like EA Game’s hockey game’s name NHL10.

So much so that when going through the ordering process, by ordering process I mean that I ask Tracey if she could use her internet magic to find me a really cheap copy of a game and then she orders it, I wait and then it shows up.  We somehow ordered NHL2K10 instead of the desired NHL10.

But look, a hockey game is a hockey game even though they don’t use the word in the title (yes I know that H stands for hockey, it’s not really my point).  So I had a play with the game and realised that I did not pay enough attention to The Mighty Ducks franchise of films and thus knew very little about any hockey terms except a flying duck and there doesn’t appear to be a button for that.

There are buttons for a bunch of other stuff but I’ve got no idea what they’re talking about so apparently I’m going to have to go to wikipedia and learn stuff.

Damnit.

I have gotten myself into a nice pattern of losing by huge numbers and only using the two button, shoot and pass.  Actually that’s a lie the circle button can be used when you don’t have the puck to smash into other players including your own as well as the net and the wall.

To date I have won one match.  The team I was playing must have been drunk or something, are there drunken hockey teams out there?  If so then this would be their simulation and I can only hope to play them again.

In fairness despite my aversion to actually winning, the game is a lot of fun so far and does make me want to scratch the surface a little deeper.

Now off to wikipedia to learn what the hell a deke is and why I want to do it?

Well, y'know, EA's game doesn't say “hockey” either.
The manoeuvre in Mighty Ducks is called a “Flying V”.

From what you say, the default control scheme sounds quite different to that of EA's NHL10. I confess, after a day of playing ice hockey today, I've become more accustomed to the newer control scheme. Though it may also help that I've dropped to the Rookie difficulty level. Now I can score goals.

You and your 'days of playing hockey'

    Jealous :(

I think the games themselves actually differ in a lot of fundamentals, from what I've gathered from your descriptions you play more as a player in EA and as an overall team in 2K.

I'm hoping that they do differ enough to give me different gaming experiences as I have the EA game on its way and it would be a shame to have to drop one of the titles completely.

Aside from Football (both gridiron and pitch based), I've always liked the 2K sports titles better.

I don't think I even played a 2K game before this one. I generally like it but I think I've got a long way to go working out the game itself. It was the same for soccer, i basically understood the general rules but now have a much better appreciation for it and the skill set.

I'm tempted by a gridiron game, all my gridiron knowledge comes from the films Varsity Blues and Friday Night Lights.

Does ice hockey play over November / December?

Oh I forgot to mention, picked up Motor Storm yesterday and will post initial reactions tomorrow (probably, I want to play it again first)

The ice hockey season is currently in session. Runs from October to March, or thereabouts. But the EASHL (EA Sports Hockey League), which is online, runs monthly. Which is tempting.

I'll make you a deal. I'll explain gridiron to you if you can explain rugby to me.

    LOL
Please do it in the comments here. I'd love to hear Lee explain rugby. League or Union?
