a couple of gamers blogging about games

I finally found it at a reasonable price, so I bought Uncharted. The catch, however, is that I already played and completed Uncharted 2 late last year. Considering the number of times Uncharted 2 was declared “Game Of The Year” for 2009, was I going to be disappointed by Uncharted?

What must not be forgotten is that just as Uncharted 2, timed along with the release of the PS3 Slim, re-invigorated the PS3 platform, Uncharted proved to gamers and game developers what was possible with the platform (apparently Uncharted only uses one-third of the PS3′s capabilities).

Visually, Uncharted is still great when compared to Uncharted 2, but there are noticeable differences. This is mainly due to the fact that Uncharted 2 was more polished — it feels more like a movie — as well as it being made with developers who had become more familiar with the PS3′s capabilities.

Uncharted vs Uncharted 2

It’s probably not reasonable to categorise this as a “First Impression” since I’ve played 84% of the game according to my latest save. But what that reveals to me is that the game isn’t as long as its sequel either. Uncharted 2 is a true epic in scale: not only are there hours and hours and hours of gameplay but the locations are wider ranging – Nepal, Tibet, Borneo and Turkey. So, comparatively, Uncharted feels short.

Ultimately, when comparing the first game to its second, it feels to me like Uncharted was a bit of a test. Uncharted 2 is the concept fully realised.

There is talk already of Uncharted 3. There is talk of even better visuals and a deeper plot. Considering that Uncharted 2 was awarded 100% by so many publications, how can Uncharted 3 exceed that? I can’t wait to find out. And in the meantime, I’m tempted to play Uncharted 2 yet again (which would be my 4th play-through).
